What is Western Keyboard?
The biggest question people have revolves around playing training on a keyboard versus an acoustic piano. The main difference between a piano and keyboard is that the piano is an acoustic instrument that is made of many strings that, like a guitar or any other stringed instruments, must be tuned regularly. Keyboards are electric variants of this acoustic instrument that don’t require much upkeep, occupy lesser space and are easier to transport.
Learning Western Keyboard At Sriguruji
The Learning Journey
At the Academy, we provide the keyboard during class and encourage students to come practice. We don’t expect students to carry the heavy instrument to each class.
Students at Sriguruji Art Academy are first taught to read and write music notations. Beginners familiarise themselves with the grammar and appearance of written music.
Learning theory will allow students to play their choice of songs and transpose it into a key that is easier for them to play and sing along if necessary. Next come scales which are vital to learning the keyboard. This technique helps students figure out notes on the keyboard and their various locations and octaves.
Intermediate and advanced students learn various scales, progressions, modes, chord formulas, ear training and even transposing to other instruments. Though it takes a while to get used to playing with both hands, with practice, the dexterity and coordination highly improves.
The Academy conducts yearly Internal Assessments followed by a Parent Teacher meeting to share the student’s learning curve. Sriguruji students undergo systematic practical and conceptual training and are encouraged to appear for Trinity College of London Exams. These exams are optional. Over 30 students take these exams every December.
