What is Djembe?
"Dje" means gather and "be" means everyone. Among the Jeli tribe of Africa, playing the Djembe marks the traditional beginning of ceremonies. In today's times, the rhythmic djembe is making its way into global music as a favourable percussion instrument.
Learning Djembe At Sriguruji
The Learning Journey
With the aim to chanellize high-energy kids and to harness their innate rhythmic sense, Sriguruji Art Academy offers Djembe classes specifically for children of ages 4-6years.
Playing other percussion instruments like Drums or Tabla, require a certain robustness of the hand which is developed organically with the learning of the djembe. Students get acclimatised to basic tempo patterns, striking techniques, and learn the mathematics of beats. More importantly, students develop ambidexterity (use of both hands), enhanced hand eye coordination and gross motor skills, and are instilled with disciple and patience that comes along with learning an art form.
After the age of 6, students are encouraged to take to Drums or Tabla to improve upon their percussion skills.
