What is Carnatic Vocal?
The word 'Carnatic', is interestingly derived from the word Karnataka, is widely associated with Andhra Pradesh’s Saint Tyagaraja and yet is performed by artists from Tamil Nadu!
A common question we get asked is about the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic Music. Though both are based on raagas which constitute combination of swaraas, the treatment given to them is different. As an analogy, imagine making different dishes with the same ingredients.
Learning Carnatic Vocal At Sriguruji
The Learning Journey
Our vocal classes are open to kids from the young age of 4. Here, the teacher focuses on children enjoying and familiarising with the art form in a play way method. Along with the gaining familiarity with the basic seven notes, basic combinations of swaras, simple bhajans are taught to enhance pronunciation.
Students go on to learn the tala system and we ensure that Beginners get a strong hold of recognising and singing in pitch (known as shruti) before they go ahead.
Intermediate students explore geetams and varnams in various speeds. It is imperative that one sticks to the tala and the laya along with being in shruti, at this stage. Practicing with the Shruti box at home is encouraged.
Advanced students learn keertanams in an assortment of raagas. An advanced student enjoys the benefit of being able to appreciate the nuances of various raagas and embellishing the singing with gamakas unique to Carnatic Music singing. They train to improvise by creating swara combinations – Kalpana Swaaras. Here’s where the creativity of the artist meets the math of Carnatic music.
